In 2006 Gunner travelled to Brittany. Here he was deeply inspired by the landscape. He entered a very productive period in his life. He managed to merge his interest in nature with inspiration from surrealism, into a unique style he felt was his. Inspired by his favourite paintings by Max Ernst, such as “Empire after the rain II” and “The Robing of the Bride” (which he called the swamp paintings), he had worked on a painting style, without brushstrokes, scraping and pressing paint for effect for some time. It was through the black cliffs of the Brittany coast he found strength in the technique.
He carried on working on various series depicting his favourite coastal landscapes from Denmark. The style developed further into dream landscapes of Eskilstrup orchard, a fruit plantation he had roamed in as a child. The style is unique in the way it does not reduce to a predictive figurative language, while still capturing and creating a strong sentiment of nature and the sensation of being in the landscape.
