Gunner la Cour

30 of September -19 of October 2023

Open every day between 12.00 – 16.00.

Private-view 30 September 13.00 -16.00

This exhibition shows a selection of art Gunner la Cour created over his life, where he worked prolifically, isolated and dedicated to developing his own unique painting style. Inspired by surrealism and the ever-changing zeitgeist, he experimented over time with different materials and subjects.

You will be able to see works from different periods: His fluid colours and shapes that were the beginning of his interest in capturing the broad spectrum of light tones in the 60s. How memories and impressions from South America were captured in an erotic dream universe of the 70s. How nature and worldviews both became bigger and came closer when mass media became part of everyday life in the 80s. And finally, the last 30 years, when Gunner found peace in a self-confident visual expression with a focus on landscape and trees. Here he managed to mix his interest in nature with inspiration from surrealism into a unique style he felt was his. A painting style without brushstrokes where he scraped and pressed the paint instead, the style is unique in that it does not have a simplistic predictive imagery, while still capturing and creating a strong sense of nature and feeling of being in the landscape.

Gunner died in October 2021. The exhibition and his digital archive have been put together by his daughter Iben la Cour. This exhibition is not a retrospective overview of his life’s work, but rather Iben has dug deep through his works to find a lifetime of dedicated work behind the main works, curating a unique chance to travel through the art over several decades and see an exciting evolution of topics and style.

KunstSmedjen is located in the Musicon area of Roskilde. It is 20 minutes on foot or 12 minutes by bus 202A from Roskilde Station.

New exhibition:

Gunner la CourDanish Landscapes

3 September – 25 December 2023

This exhibition shows Danish landscapes and trees from the end of Gunner la Cour’s long career as a painter. Mainly painted from his favourite coastal landscapes and forests, around Møn, Hesnæs, Bogø and Maltrup, and dreamscapes from an orchard in Eskilstrup, in which he played as a child. The images have a fleeting and nostalgic expression, of idyllic moments in nature that cannot really be captured, the sun on one’s skin, the wind that sways the treetops, the light that breaks through the branches, the rush and roar of the water. Expressed by scraping brush strokes and colour choices all the way back to the sober and bare, space is given for depth, impressions, and emotions. In this way, they create a strong image of the scenic areas around Lolland Falster and surroundings and majestic trees.

Gunner painted from an early age. Through his life he worked prolifically and dedicatedly to develop his own unique painting style, inspired by surrealism and the ever-changing zeitgeist, he experimented with different materials and subjects. For the last 30 years Gunner found a self-confident visual expression with focus on nature and landscape, here he managed to mix his interest in nature with inspiration from surrealism into a unique style that he felt was his. inspired by his favourite paintings by Max Ernst. He worked with a painting style without brush strokes, where he scraped and pressed the paint instead. The style is unique in the way that it does not reduce to a predictive figurative language, but still capture and creating a strong feeling of nature and being in the landscape.

Gunner died October 2021. This exhibition and his digital archive have been put together by his daughter Iben la Cour.
